On Thursday over a thousand people gathered on Fort Myers Beach for “National Seashell Day.” 1,093 volunteers formed the largest human image of a seashell.  Later the same day, Guinness World Record officials confirmed that the record attempt was a success.

Even City of Fort Myers employees were able to pitch in from their desks downtown.  Organizers received support from the GIS (Geographic Information System) department to help get everyone in place.

According to a city employee, GIS used software to create an overlay of the shell. They then had people form the outer edges of the shell using rope. More people were funneled to the inside of the shell before removing the rope for aerial photographs.

A fun, yet constructive way to spend National Seashell Day and the first day of Summer!
